How to Use the Muay Thai Long Guard for Defense

The Long Guard is the “shield” of Muay Thai. Unlike the tight “peek-a-boo” guard used in boxing, the Long Guard involves extending one or both arms to physically obstruct your opponent’s vision and range. By placing a palm on the opponent’s shoulder or forehead, you “stifle” their momentum before they can unload. However, beware the elbow—the Long Guard leaves your midsection open, so it must be used as a transition, not a permanent wall.
